2008 Stand Up Against Poverty Event -IYDC Partnering TUCCAN Foundation




The Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) is the world’s largest anti-poverty civil society alliance of social movements, International NGOs, trade unions, community groups, women’s organizations, faith and youth groups, local associations and campaigners working together across more than 100 national coalitions. It uses various strategies such as popular mobilization, lobby and media, by highlighting and strengthening local anti-poverty campaigns and struggles toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals in 2015

In the year 2008, IYDC Youth Forum in partnership with TUCCAN Foundation, conducted in-school & Community Rally to stand up against Poverty from the 17th & 19th October 2008. The event draw the attention of the Kano State government, Private Sector, Community and Religious leaders, Schools Administrators. About 500 Almajiri children joined the community rally to speak and stand against Poverty.

IYDC End of the 2006 - 2007 Parties



The 2006 and 2007 IYDC End of the Year Parties were put together by Communication Support Centre {C-Support}. The 2006 EOYP programme was done at the Kano State Tiga Dam in line with the 2006 World AIDS Day event with about 40 young people in attendance- The young people in attendance discussed the "Role of Youth in HIV Prevention", thereafter was the Networking session, Boat Ride, Music and Dance, Dance, Dance.

The 2007 EOYP was done at Communication Support Centre Youth Ground with about 60 young people in attendance; the year theme was: "Youth & Climate Change Mitigation"- The topic was facilitated by Mr. Sufi Abdullahi from Federation of Nigeria Youth Greens Network; thereafter was facilitation on "Youth Participation" by Miss Akeju Olukemi Abimbola from TUCCAN Foundation. There was opportunity for youth deliberation on the two topics. Thereafter was the award ceremony to honor the some IYDC Youth Forum Members, Christian Jeremiah bagged the 2008 Best IYDC Youth, while Idris Olabisi, Tahir Abdulkadir, Solomon Isah, and Fasuyi Peter bagged Forum Membership Awards. The Event End ended with a Networking Session & Youth Get together Party.

DESPLAY is an initiative of Youngstars Foundation on youths and
democratization, funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) Washington DC USA. DESPLAY is a mind changing, knowledge based and action-oriented project for
youth organization and young people in Nigeria. DESPLAY seeks to foster active
youth involvement in democratization, political process and human rights in
Nigeria towards sustainable democracy and good governance in Nigeria
and Africa at large.

Participants are drawn from the six geopolitical zones of the country are currently working together on different aspects of democracy and good governance in Nigeria. Topics discussed related to the concept of democracy, the history of Democracy in Nigeria, structures of democracy and governance in general. There was a Reading exercise was on The Quality of Democracy, a text from The Journal of Democracy published periodically by NED. A debate on the State of the Nation and the state of the youths generated good intellectual exchange and also promoted better dialogue skills predicated on respect for the human person in spite of differing views and disagreements in ideologies.
Participants also took time out to interact with cross sections of the
community on their perception about democracy and governance in
Youth Internship at the National Assembly, Abuja. As a basic learning
component, placements were secured for 5 DESPLAY participants who interned for 3 weeks at the National Assembly.

LIFE VANGUARD (LIVA) YOUTHS OSUN STATE AND NASSARAWA CENTRE FOR WOMEN, YOUTH AND COMMUNITY ACTION (NACWYCA) VISIT TO IYDC KANO


IYDC youth forum organized an interstate visit with the youths on National Youth Exchange Programme from Life Vanguards Youth Organization (LIVA) from Oshogbo Osun state and NACWYCA from Nassarawa state to develop leadership skills between young people and promote cross cultural learning to enhance youths involvement in sustainable development projects in their different communities. The purpose is to promote national cooperation, harmony, to understand and appreciate different cultures within the Nigerian states

DEBATE TO ACTION CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM FOR YOUTH ORGANISATIONs


The world bank/British council Debate to Action {DTA} program is a Training of Trainers program aimed at youth leaders in Youth Serving Organizations and Youth Service Corps. The program was designed and implemented in cooperation with the ministry of intergovernmental affairs and youths through the office of the director of the youth the NYSC as well as the national youth council. Participants learn about the MDGs and Needs, how to effectively share the information with other people in their communities and how to determine their own roles within the framework. IYDC youths were represented five days seminar in 2006 & 2008.

SAFE LIFE PLAN (SLIP)


FACING THE DRAGON-Safe life plan (SLIP}, was the IYDC youth advocacy program develop in 2005 to instill negotiation skills for safe life among the school youths. The SLIP program was a one year program spread into four terms targeting. Its primary objective was to introduce basic reproductive health information and negotiation skills to youths of ten to twenty four years. It was an interaction program that trained youth on various ways to enhance their skills on how to protect themselves from various levels of life risks especially those related to unplanned pregnancies, abstinence, unsafe sex, and HIV/AIDS.

IYDC CELEBRATES 2006 WORLD AIDS DAY


1ST December is a memorable day for the worlds AIDs day. IYDC sent out forms to youths in Kano for essay writing on the role of the Nigerian youths in the prevention of HIV/AIDS in line with the global theme for 2006 World AIDs day accountability slogan ‘Stop Aids. Keep the promise’. Forty youths participated in the essay writing certificates are awarded to the essay writers. Also to mark the worlds Aids day, IYDC youths went to the street and secondary schools to access the Knowledge of people of Kano on HIV/AIDs, Attitudes towards prevention and Practice to prevent further spread.
